Choosing the right paper for printing or packaging can be confusing because paper weight is described using several different measurements. The most common terms are GSM (grams per square meter), pounds (lb), and points (pt). Although these measurements are related, they do not mean exactly the same thing.

One important distinction is between text paper and cover paper. The same pound number can represent very different types of paper depending on the stock category. For example, 80 lb text paper is considerably lighter and thinner than 80 lb cover stock. This is why an 80 lb cover sheet can work well for business cards, postcards, and other products that require a sturdy feel, while 80 lb text stock is more suitable for pages, flyers, brochures, and similar printed materials.
